Why we film every job. The two rocks.

The videos started as proof the work got done. They turned out to protect the homeowner and us in ways I didn't plan.

By Angel Oquendo Oahu

We do a before, during and after video on every job. Before: the condition of your panels and what's on them. During: us actually cleaning them. After: your panels clean. Same angle. Just show it.

The call, six months later

We had a customer call six months after a clean. "You guys were the last ones on my roof. I have two shattered panels." So we went back through the videos in their text messages. See the last video? It shows all your panels. None of them are broken.

But we'll come over and tell you why. We went over, and there were two big rocks somebody had thrown up onto the array.

Another time it was a big boot print in the middle of a panel. The installer's tech had been up there after us and stepped where you don't step. The panel leaves a print. "How do you know they stepped on it?" There it is.

"Not only does it show you the work got done. Later on it shows we left your roof in perfect condition."

What it protects

Roofs get damaged by crews who don't care. We've been to houses with a ceramic tile roof where somebody went up and stepped on everything. Cracked tiles everywhere. That water's going somewhere, and it's going inside the house: damage, mold. So we record everything. If a roof is too bad to walk, we record that and tell you: get this fixed first. We don't want to be the reason.

And if something does happen on our watch, we have the video, and we tell you exactly what happened and take care of it right then. "We cracked one of your tiles. We sealed it with clear RTV, took a picture, and we're going to match that tile and reinstall it." You seal it first so no water gets in, then you tell the customer, then you come back and replace it. Hours, or a couple of days.

The videos are also how I know my guys are safe

After the cleaning is done, the tech sends me the videos and sends them to the client. That means they're down in the truck and going to the next job. If the videos aren't in 30 minutes or an hour after the job should be done, we call. "What's going on?" "Oh, I forgot to send the videos." Good. But a lot of those guys are working on that roof by themselves, so the videos are our check-in. Anything after the expected time, we investigate.

What you do with them

Keep them. They're the record of your system on the day. If a panel fails later, if an installer comes back, if you sell the house, you have footage of every panel and every tile the way we left it.
